Could Inducing Hypothermia Help Revive Trauma Patients?
12:04 minutes
Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh have started a clinical trial involving a procedure called “Emergency Preservation and Resuscitation.” The technique lowers the body temperature of patients suffering certain types of severe trauma by removing their blood and replacing it with a cold saline solution in the hopes of buying more time to operate. Surgeon Hasan Alam, who has performed the procedure in pigs, describes the technique and the ethical implications of the study.
Hasan Alam is the Norman W. Thompson Professor of Surgery and head of general surgery at the University of Michigan Health Care Systems in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
