Join Ira Flatow and the rest of the SciFri crew as they hit the road to uncover and report on the amazing science news and stories happening in your local area. This is your chance to look behind the curtain of your favorite national radio show and participate in a special live performance with the scientists and conversations you love.

This 90-minute program typically features live music, props, video screenings, and demonstrations. And as a bonus, the event will be recorded so you can be a part of a future broadcast!

Here’s what we’ll be talking about:

From the roadrunner to the American kestrel, from the quail to the common house sparrow, millions of birds call Texas home. We’ll talk about these birds and the effects that human activities—like backyard bird feeders, wind farms, and cattle grazing—may be having on avian ecology.

We hear all the time about research being done on the Ebola virus. But what does that look like exactly? San Antonio is home to one of the only facilities in the U.S. that can contain the world’s most deadly diseases, like Ebola, Marburg virus, and Lassa fever. We’ll talk with scientists about the physical and mental challenges they need to overcome when working in the world’s most dangerous biolab.

Bracken Cave, 20 miles outside of San Antonio, is the summer home to 15 million Mexican free-tailed bats, one of the largest bat colonies in the world. Each night, the bats swarm out of the cave in a “batnado” in search of food. We’ll discuss life in the bat cave—how the millions of individuals form a colony and how nutrients are cycled inside—and the conservation efforts to preserve this colony.
