Every year Helen James, curator of birds at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, visits dormant Hawaiian volcanoes to look for bird fossils. She studies the fossils to determine how bird species got to remote islands, how they changed evolutionary after arriving the islands, and why islands are the site of so many recent extinctions.
Leslie is Science Friday’s Web editor. She has a background in oceanography and is passionate about getting non-scientists and young people to realize how cool science can be.
