Fans of "classical crossover" music (or PBS fundraising specials) probably know the name Sarah Brightman. Now the soprano and former "Phantom of the Opera" star is training for a new role -- cosmonaut.
Brightman announced today that she will be part of a three-person crew that will travel to the International Space Station via a Russion Soyuz rocket. The departure date will be announced in the coming months.
Brightman's trip is done in partnership with Space Adventures, Ltd., whose spaceflight clients include Dennis Tito and Charles Simonyi. Tito reportedly paid $20 million for his trip to the ISS. Simonyi reportedly paid $60 million total for his two trips to space. Brightman did not disclose how much she's paying for her seat, although Reuters reports it is likely upwards of $35 million.
