I knew the husband and wife design team of Charles Eames (1907-78) and Ray Eames (1912-88) made furniture, but I didn’t know they also put their considerable talents to work explaining science.
In 1977 the Eameses made a short film
, Powers of Ten,
which explains scale–from the macro to the micro level–by taking viewers from the cosmos, to the inside of a cell, to the space between subatomic particles. And like their iconic chair designs, this work has staying power.
includes the Eamses’ short film in the reading list for their Science Literacy Project
program participants. You can watch the film below, and find out more about the Eameses and their work here

narrated the film.)
