Earth Day – My Anniversary, Too

by Ira Flatow

This anniversary of Earth Day is special to me because I mark my entry into science journalism as happening on the 1st Earth Day back in 1970.

That day I produced my first radio science story…about Earth Day…while still in college

It was a change of pace; I had been covering anti-war demonstrations at the University (SUNY Buffalo), getting my feet wet as a reporter.

But little was I prepared for the chaos, upheaval and rioting of a few days later – Kent State shootings, May 4 – which made Earth Day feel like a forgotten memory.
