The BBC makes great nature videos. Duh. But what makes them great? I’ve been trying to figure that out. It’s more than the beautiful shots. And the weird animals. And the clever writing. And the lovable Sir David Attenborough. There’s another key ingredient.
The clip below, excerpted from the LIFE series (which we covered here), features the mudskipper. It’s eye-catching, if not eye-pleasing, but the animal really came to life when I heard it. Burping. At least, that’s what I think it’s doing 1 minute 10 seconds in. I imagine the sound engineer, holding a teeny tiny boom mic over the gassy little guy, smiling with delight when the mudskipper let it rip. Sound brings LIFE to life.
